Zallie keeps talking about senior afareet, especially in reference to possible shape-shifting. I think that it would be easier for all this stuff if we gave characters levels of experience, sort of like in D&D. Afareet of a certain level would have more seniority than those of a lower level, and the leveling system is based on power and ability, not age. (Number of posts can help us determine this, although there are some who will automatically be above others, like Muriel.)
TENTATIVE LEVELING SYSTEM--AFAREET
1- All new arrivals (not necessarily new members)to the Sandstone Fortress start here, though they may move up the ranks quickly if they're of above-average power.
2-Still relatively new and considered in training, but given more free time to practice rather than having lessons all day.
3- The highest in-training level. Level 3 afareet mostly try to develop their skills in a less structured setting. They may still techinically be being taught, but they have most of the freedom of higher-level afareet.
4- No longer training, but still fairly junior. Now allowed to leave the Fortress for other locations in Katreh without supervision.
5- Beginning to learn the use of portals to other worlds. An afreet will usually visit Earth (it's classified as "relatively safe, as long as you don't make an obvious show of magic") with someone who knows what they're doing for their first trip outside of Katreh.
6- May now use portals without supervision. At about level 6, an afreet is expected to really make themself useful, although they may have done jobs before.
7- Basically the same as level 6, only starting to explore transformation. Not trusted with any transformation potion.
8- By level 8, an afreet should know their animal form, even if they haven't yet tried it. Here, they begin to take the potion, only in small, supervised doses.
9- Afareet can now transform into their animal shape unsupervised.
Levels beyond 9 are basically just accumulating experience and rising in capability and status. There is no last level.
I'd estimate that afareet like Feng and Serra are somewhere around levels 7-8 by this system. Muriel is well beyond level 9, probably somewhere in the teens or twenties. New arrivals, like Ruby, Meg, Leah, and Ehmer start on level 1.
Understand that this is very rough. Modifications will undoubtedly be made before we even attempt implementing it, if we do at all.
So, you like? You hate? Please post and explain.
